How to run homebrew software and play DVDs on your (unmodded) Wii...

PREREQUISITES:

you'll need

  • the game "ZELDA - Twilight Princess" + a savegame (to perform the "Twilight Hack")
  • a 2GB or less FAT-formatted SD-card (doesn't need to be empty)
  • a Wii - connected to the internet (to use the Homebrew Browser)
INSTALLATION
  1. put the latest "boot.elf" of the -> Homebrew Channel (beta8 atm) in the root of SD-card
  2. create a folder called "apps" in the SD-root
    (every app inside apps has its own subfolder containing boot.elf or boot.dol.
    meta.xml and icon.png are just candy.)
  3. create an app-subfolder for the -> "Homebrew Browser" (v0.2.1b atm)
  4. copy the -> Twilight Hack (v0.1-beta1 atm) to the SD-root ( /private/wii/...)
    replace your Zelda-savegame with the one for your region (Wii system menu)
    run Zelda and apply the hack.. (load the hack-savegame and talk to the guy)

this will install the Homebrew-Channel in which you can run the Homebrew Browser.

to get DVD playback install "DVDX" and "Mplayer dvdlib edition" ("media" section)

any other apps you like can simply be put in the apps folder (some need special files in the SD-root, but the README will tell)

here's a -> list of homebrew-apps

have phun! =)
